چکیده

The role of bile acids in colorectal cancer has been well documented, but their role in pancreatic cancer remains unclear. In this review, we examined the risk factors of pancreatic cancer. We found that bile acids are associated with most of these factors. Alcohol intake, smoking, and a high-fat diet all lead to high secretion of bile acids, and bile acid metabolic dysfunction is a causal factor of gallstones. An increase in secretion of bile acids, in addition to a long common channel, may result in bile acid reflux into the pancreatic duct and to the epithelial cells or acinar cells, from which pancreatic adenocarcinoma is derived. The final pathophysiological process is pancreatitis, which promotes dedifferentiation of acinar cells into progenitor duct-like cells. Interestingly, bile acids act as regulatory molecules in metabolism, affecting adipose tissue distribution, insulin sensitivity and triglyceride metabolism. As a result, bile acids are associated with three risk factors of pancreatic cancer: obesity, diabetes and hypertriglyceridemia. In the second part of this review, we summarize several studies showing that bile acids act as cancer promoters in gastrointestinal cancer. However, more question are raised than have been solved, and further oncological and physiological experiments are needed to confirm the role of bile acids in pancreatic cancer carcinogenesis.

Bile acids induce cyclooxygenase-2 expression in human pancreatic cancer cell lines.

To investigate a possible link between bile acids and the pathogenesis of pancreatic cancer, we determined whether conjugated or unconjugated bile acids induced cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in two human pancreatic cancer cell lines, BxPC-3 and SU 86.86. Bile acids are known promoters of gastric and colon cancer. We demonstrated previously that COX-2, an enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of prosta...

Comparative Assessment of New Curriculum Development of Restorative Dentistry with Old Curriculum Development From The Perspective Of Faculty Members Of Selected Iranian Universities

Background: Restorative dentistry is an important branch of dentistry and therefore it is very important to train students that have all or the majority of the skills to start practice. The aim of this study was to compare new and old curricula of restorative lessons form the perspective of faculty members of selected Iranian universities. Methods: The perspectives and viewpoints of the faculty...

Genetic polymorphism in cytochrome P450 7A1 and risk of colorectal cancer: the Fukuoka Colorectal Cancer Study.

Bile acids have long been implicated in the etiology of colorectal cancer, but epidemiologic evidence remains elusive. Cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase (CYP7A1) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the synthesis of bile acids from cholesterol in the liver, and thus may be an important determinant of bile acid production. We examined the association between the CYP7A1 A-203C polymorphism and colorectal ...

Cytotoxic and antimicrobial effects of lactobacillus sakei on human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line (HT29) and some pathogenic microorganisms

Background: Even after surgery, as the most effective treatment for colorectal cancer, about 30-40% of cases are recurring. Since growth inhibition is an important strategy in cancer treatment, many attempts are in the program to find new agents, so in this study, the cytotoxic and antimicrobial effects of Lactobacillus sakei on colon cancer cell line (HT-29) and some pathogenic microorganisms ...

Role of bile acids in colorectal carcinogenesis.

Dietary factors are considered important environmental risk determinants for colorectal cancer development. Epidemiological studies have shown that a high fat (or meat) intake is associated positively and a high starch, fibre (non-starch polysaccharide), vegetable and fruit intake negatively with colorectal cancer incidence. One mechanism by which these effects are possibly exerted is through t...
